One of the most important things about incorporating soft furnishings into your hotel interior design is how the fabrics work together. Being able to choose the right fabrics should be at the core of every decorating scheme.
However, aside from just choosing the right fabrics, it’s also about how you put them all together. The right fabrics can be treated as a major focal point, or alternatively, they could subtly highlight your design scheme based on the colour, pattern or texture.

1. Getting Started With Your Soft Furnishings
Whether you are looking at cushions, throws, or curtains, try not to see them as a single piece, but a broader outlook. The trick is not just choosing a single fabric, but to create a family of fabrics that work together to create a certain look and feel.
Once you have selected your fabrics, the next step is laying out where each will go.

2. Look Out For Textures
One key aspect when working with fabrics is to add different textures. If too many of the same textures are used, your scheme can look flat. Collect a few samples and start putting them together and play around with them until you are completely satisfied with the result. Don’t be afraid of choosing too many different styles or textures, as it’s better to start with more, and slowly eliminate them as you streamline the style and tone that you are going for.
3. What Will Each Thing Be Used For?
While you are creating your fabric scheme, think where each fabric will go or what it will be used for. Every fabric sample comes with a label that shows what that fabric might be suitable for, such as window treatments or upholstery.
Look at the composition and the rub count. Understanding rub count is important in order to see the durability and suitability of a fabric. Sometimes you will find some little icons or other time a rub number given by the Martindale test. The rubs number will indicate if a fabric is suitable for decorative purposes only (less than 10,000 rubs,) for light domestic (10,000 to 15,000,) or heavy duty (25,000 to 30,000 rubs.)
4. Maintenance And Practicality
Think carefully about the maintenance of the fabric you choose. For high-traffic areas of your hotel, opt for a fabric that can be easily washed or wiped. Most of the fabrics nowadays can be treated and cleaned easily, but be sure to keep this in mind. You may also opt for a fabric protection that repels spills. Another thing to keep in mind is the direction your room is facing. Is your room receiving a significant amount of natural light? If so, silk might not be the best window treatment choice.
5. Liven Things Up With Cushions & Throws
There are so many types of cushions that match all shapes, sizes, and budgets. Once you have planned out space room, you can also transform it by adding a pop of colour with cushions and throws. You can also change the look of your room throughout the year, just based on the style or colour of your cushions.
Experiment with different sizes too. Try a combination of large and small cushions with various textures and see the effect it has on your space. Throws are another good way to use soft furnishing to add interest in texture and colour. These can be used in guest areas, or even public areas.
