Caring for your furniture correctly is an important step in prolonging your furniture’s lifespan. However, selection of materials is also an essential part. For improved durability, fabrics should be chosen based on a number of elements.
Aside from design, colour, and textures which are all part of designing your custom furniture fabrics, durability is also very important.
Here are a few things to keep in mind when selecting fabrics.

Here are a few things to keep in mind when selecting fabrics.
The Fabric Abrasion Test
There are two types of tests that allow us to measure the abrasion performance of fabrics. These are the Martindale Test and the Wyzenbeek Rub Test. You will usually see this information included in the technical data sheet of most fabrics.
Both of these tests are used to measure the durability of a fabric. During the test, the fabric is pulled taut while being continuously rubbed against. The fabric will be inspected for wear and tear, such as a change in appearance or when two yarns break.
The test results may appear as “Martindale 10,000 Rubs or Wyzenbeek 10,000 Double Rubs. Based on the value of the test results, we can decide which types of furniture a fabric would be suitable for, ranging from decorative use or light use, to heavy duty use or commercial use.

Colour Fastness
Colour fastness represents a fabric’s resistance to colour fading when exposed to various elements. This may include light, water, crocking, and more. When it comes to fabrics for upholstery and furniture, the focus is more towards colour fastness to light and UV rays. Colour Fastness to Light, also known as Lightfastness, determines the resistance of a fabric when exposed to natural sunlight.

Cleanability
When it comes to cleanability, one of the things to keep in mind is stain or water repellency of a fabric. While all fabrics are made of fibres which makes them naturally absorbent, Stain Resistant is a chemical treatment that can be applied to fabrics. This helps to reduce absorbency or repel stains and water upon contact. This is an especially important step when selecting fabrics for upholstered built-in furniture.
Unlike loose cushions which generally have removable covers that can be washed separately, upholstered built-in furniture is limited to spot cleaning.

Water Repellent, Stain Resistant & Mildew Resistant
The fabrics undergo the Teflon/Scotchgard surface treatments, which assures an excellent repellency in the case of rain or of stains from food, drinks, or greasy substances.
UV Protection Shield
The IRISUN® fabrics make a shield against UV rays and are therefore very suitable for outdoor as well as indoor applications.
Extraordinary Fearless Fabric
With extreme resistance to the elements of outdoor weather exposure, as well as indoor spills and accidents, IRISUN is a fabric you can rely on. All IRISUN® fabrics are certified OEKOTEX. This certification controls the respects of the limit values of contaminants according to the stricter European and American regulations.
